Category: Cell Phone Talk
Hi all
I post this question, purely out of interest because i used to have an iphone and now have gone back to the C5. I don't know myself being able to text fast again! My question is has anyone else experienced similar, and would you ever go back to a simple button phone with talks from an iphone as i have? if i could afford to pay 2 phone bills, i would have an iphone for sure as the functionality of apps like mail and tweetlist is amazing, but i can't and therefore i had to make a choice, and i wanted to be able to text fast, as i do text a lot!
thoughts appreciated!
i am in the same situation and i am considering going back to my good old and perfectly working n96 with talks5 on it, i consider doing this particularly every time i am typing on my iphone and have to curse horribly with every letter i type. lol i haven't done it yet because my iphone is full of cool apps and everything, but i text, msn or generally write a lot and i want to be able to do it fast, plus with that one i could just walk down the street and write and with the iphone you need 2 hands most of the times.
Have you tried cases with built in keyboards such as the boxwave buddy: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=boxwave+buddy&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CDIQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.boxwave.com%2Fiphone-4-cases-and-covers%2Fkeyboard-buddy-iphone-4-case%2Fbwpdd%2Fpkz-twvc%2F&ei=p7BPT4b7EM_UiAL9yMm0Bg&usg=AFQjCNGjMy8EIWAf1tsZCBwzxlwXzpv-Tg
This might be an alternative if you still want to use the iPhone.
Yep. I still use Talks on an N86. The main reason I haven't switched over to an iPhone is that I want to be able to text fast on the go. I have an iPod Touch for all the apps and fun stuff so I don't feel like I'm having to sacrifice much. I'll switch eventually, but as long as my N86 keeps running, I'll stick with it.
what does talks do? I want an iPhone because my phone just has a voice guide and I never know what I'm texting because it doesn't read as I type.
It's a screen reader for cell phones running on the Symbien operating system. Symbien is basically only found on Nokia phones and is dying a slow death. It's not a real practical solution anymore since it is pretty much only compatible with older phones. Nokia is switching to the Windows mobile platform and phasing out Symbien. I recall reading that Nokia is releasing one more line of Symbien based phones pretty soon, but that this might be it. If you really want to do it, I recommend looking around for a used phone that already has Talks installed. It isn't cost effective to buy a phone then pay the $300 for a Talks license when it's only compatible with obsolete technology. I'm still using it because I've had the license for years and was using it before the iPhone was an option. If I didn't have it and was looking for a solution now, I'd go iPhone for sure. Talks just isn't worth the expense any more in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love Talks and really prefer it to Voiceover. I like that it uses Eloquence Text to speech (same as JAWS). It's just unfortunate that it is limited to a dying operating system. I don't know if there are any plans to develop a different version of Talks for another operating system. I haven't kept up with the news on that. I hope they do. I'm sure it would still be pricey, but it'd still be nice to have the option.
hmm, it would be nice to see a engine of elequants ported over to android android. As for wanting a keyboard, yes your going to get tired of me saying this, but android is a viable option to use if you want to leave talks altogether, we have apps on the android platform that are accessible. Here is a really great web sight to check out what I am saying, http://www.androidaccess.net
I still use Talks. I have a Nokia E73 mode and looove it!! I wouldn't switch to an Iphone if I were paid to. My phone does everything I need it to do and more. i could not be happier with it. So, I will use it until it does and I'm forced to switch to Android.
Take Care,
Dawnielle
That day is coming soon, very soon, when the devs for talks create something for android and simbion finally dies.
As much as I loved talks I could never give up my IPhone now that I've experienced it. Gone are te days of having to pay more than the price of the phone itself to buy a separate screen reader. If a day comes when the Android also does that maybe I'll consider it.
actually that day is here already. Talkback and spiel are both free, At&T offers Mobile accessibility lite, and sprint and boost mobile offer wireless accessibility. Now with the new Android 4.0 ice Cream Sandwich phones, talkback comes right out of the box and a simple rectangle drawn with your finger on the screen activates it. The nice thing about Android is choice, The iPhone has only and only one choice, Voice Over and though it is nice, some people prefer a little choice.
I'm also still with talks and nokia E71.
I do like to try IPhone once. but it's much costly as buying a good branded laptop here.
And again, I don't use my phone much other than calling and texting so...
Dinesh aka Raaj.
Except that I've played with Spiel and Talkback on a borrowed Android and wasn't impressed. And anyyway you still ahve to install them on the phone. It doesn't come built in. Again, when the Android does that maybe it might measure up.
i used to have a talks phone. but i generly use my iphone. all the yayay.way.
Except for ICS phones you do not have to install any screenreader it comes out of the box. Just because you have to have the store rep install spiel or talkback does not mean android does not mesure up to the Iphone. Try reading your screen of a laptop or desktop when it crashes with your Iphone. We can do that with google goggles quite well. Last but not least, do to something called patents, we can never have IOS like gesters for any of our screen readers with out getting slapped with a law suit. Let me refur you to a pod cast explaining more "that android show". So as a android user, I can do as much as you bryon with your Iphone but with a android phone.
Let me lastly say, I am in no way dogging the Iphone just clearing up some android myths, both are great platforms but android allows for flexibility and some of us Smart phone users want that option.
Oh I don't know. The IPhone seems pretty flexible. And at least it doesn't use Eloquence for its speach. I wouldn't even use Eloquence on my computer at all if it weren't for the fact tat it's got the fastest response time of any synthe I tried. On the IPhone I've got the Australian Karen voice and that's fine by me.
I have a n82 with talks and the knfb reader on it. remember when all that sold for about 1995??? Now you just about have to give it away.
I use both Talks and an Iphone. I kee the talks because I am stil getting used to the iphone.
so do you have both phones turned on from different or the same carrier?
what kinda phone is it?
No, nt from the same carer. My iphone is from Orange and the talks is a Virgin one.
so Vergion is GSM?
i meant what kinda phone is it? like is it a nokia N80 , HTC Ozone , what ?
I used to have a nokia 86 but it broke. Now AI have a c 5 I think it is.
i ordered aboxwave Buddy yesterday and can't wait to get it. Then my Iphone will be just about perfect.
My husband was using talks up until last summer when his old flip phone litterally fell apart in his hands. He's now got an HTC Status with Mobile accessibility and while he'll never admit it, I think he would have much more enjoyed the Iphone. He's had nothing but problems trying to do stuff with his new phone. about the only thing we like about it is the keyboard. I don't know enough about android, nor do I really care to learn, to help him with it and he's not really a techy so other than the frustration of it contastantly doing wierd things, he's satisfied with it. He would have rather continue to use Talks but oh well, such is life. at&t wasn't offering any new phones with it so we made the switch. One of these days, he's going to get so pissed at his current phone that he'll throw it out the window and then I'll convert him to an Iphone. buahahaha.
he should get an older phone that works on the AT&T network if he wishes to co continue to use Talks.
maybe starfly would be willing to help, since its an android device.
Yeah, we probably should have done that but we're in for a penny and in for a pound so to speak for now. lol
I can help but I will be up front here, HTC UI causes headakes even in IceCream sandwige. Look at this, HTGC and samsung cover android with a UI or a cover to maike tasks for sighted peple easier. HTC sense in gingerbred and IceCream sandwige. MA is a good choice to work with but talkback and the eyes free keyboard will make his life a little easier. He will be able to answer calls wants he enables call system screens under moble accessibility and installs the eyes free keyboard or an app found on my app board called hand and glove. Hope this helps the poster husband, and to make it clear I would never suggest a gingerbred or HTC phone as long as I live.
Are there new phones being manufactured that still support Talks ?
Verizon had the HTC Ozone some while ago, but that was 2006, also.
I heard nokia is releaseing a last batch of phones that run on the Cimbian bassed OS, so perhaps those would?
I did a little research into the Ozone. Turns out this phone runs Windows Mobile 6.0. that leads me to wonder if other phones runnign this version of the Windows OS work with Talks as well? why does Nuance say it runs on Synbeian only?
Um.... why shell money out for a simbion phone who's OS has been given a death certificate, same for win6 moble? If you want cut cop and paste to a Micro SD card or to the internal storage of the phone take a look at an jelly bean android phone.
I have a friend that had the HTC Status and had major problems with the phone itself. He now has an iPhone as a result. I don't know anyone that has Talks anymore; everyone I know either has iPhones or androids.
I know that the company that owns talks has plans for android what they have in store not sure.
